I prefer Basil Rathbone. He had a better arrogance to the role however the entire co-starring ruined the series as watson and lestrade were portrayed as incompetent fools
To me, Jeremy Brett will always be Sherlock Holmes. I know some people say Basil Rathbone because he was the original or something, but Rathbone’s series just didn’t get the dynamic between Holmes and Watson right. This series got it spot on and that is why it’s my favourite.
I agree with you. The Rathbone series just made Watson look like a total moron. He only looked dumb compared to Holmes, in the story, and they were very close freinds–the freindship just isn’t there, believable, in the Rathbone ones. Though I think Rathbone was a genius and good holmes and maybe looked abit more like story-book holmes. But Brett just IS Holmes–Not just in looks. Brett is #1 Holmes!
If come December the general feedback is that this SH film is better than all of the trailers I’ve seen so far, I’ll certainly give it a chance,if the basic consensus is that Downey’s portrayal of Holmes is right up there with Matt Frewer’s and Dudley Moore’s except with a bigger CGI budget, I probably won’t, fair enough?
This ‘modern version’ of Holmes has a Sherlock Holmes who dresses up in clothing that looks like it was stolen from London’s East End and doesn’t bath or shave and can’t use a comb, plus he has a habit of stealing Watson’s clothing and has a villain who looks more like Sherlock Holmes as far as his profile goes than RDJ does. This may be Guy Ritchie and Warner Brothers version of Sherlock Holmes but it’s nothing close to Arthur Conan Doyle’s character which is why it gets trashed so much.

There will never be a Sherlock Holmes quite like Jeremy Brett. RIP.

Yep, they now have on Hulu the other Holmes series, but it just doesn’t feel right.

Naw, Holmes looks adorable all wrapped up like that. And positively miserable. Doctor’s orders, though, Holmes, and Watson’s orders, too.
